The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service in California said today that it is making an additional $10 million available for Golden State farmers and ranchers interested in reducing air-polluting emissions.

The new funding comes on top of $13 million made available earlier this year through the federal 2008 Farm Bill’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program. The funds offer California agricultural producers incentives for retiring old, inefficient engines that contribute to air pollution.

“This program has been so successful that we wanted to make more funding available for the large number of farmers and ranchers still requesting assistance this year,” said Ed Burton, NRCS conservationist for California.

The 36 counties eligible for funds include Sacramento, El Dorado, Placer and Yolo counties.

NRCS said it administered $18.7 million and funded 335 applications for replacement of on-farm diesel combustion engines in 2009.

Funding applications should be sent to local USDA Service Centers. Visit www.ca.nrcs.usda.gov or call (530) 792-5600, or (916) 714-1104 for details.
