Legislative Alert – Call to Action!!!

Shortly before noon today the Illinois State Board of Education adopted a budget which provided zero dollars for the Agricultural Education Line Item. The motion was made and passed with the recommendation that the Governor use Discretionary Funds to support the Agricultural Education line item (and about 5 other grant programs). While supportive of Agricultural Education the ISBE Board members simply felt there are insufficient dollars to meet all of education’s needs.

We have little time and few options available. Here is what needs done.

  • Print the attachments to this e-mail or go to the IAVAT Website and download the items: a) Ag Ed Line Item & ISBE Goals, b) Impact of Zeroing Out Agricultural Education Line Item, and July 2010 Testimony. These are great references for your use in composing an e-mail, letter or making a phone call.
  • Contact the Governor’s Office. The Deputy Assistant for Education is Julie Smith – her e-mail is julie.smith@illinois.gov
  • Explain how the Ag Ed line item is used in your program
  • Explain how the loss of dollars will hurt the program and students
  • Ask that the Governor use his Discretionary Funds to restore the Agricultural Education Line Item
  • Inform them the Agricultural Education Line Item has been “zeroed out” of the ISBE Budget.

  • Explain how the loss of dollars will hurt the program and students

  • Contact ten Agricultural Education Supporters in your community (administrators, school board members, agribusiness owners, past FFA members, alumni members, advisory committee members, parents, community leaders, retired ag teachers, etc)
  • Inform them the Agricultural Education Line Item has been “zeroed out” of the ISBE Budget.
  • Explain how the Ag Ed line item is used in your program
  • Explain how the loss of dollars will hurt the program and students
  • Provide copies of the information posted online or attached to this e-mail
  • Ask that they make contact with the Governor’s Office and the legislators to request the Governor use Discretionary Funds to restore the Agricultural Education Line Item
  • Copy this information to your local newpaper and visit with your local radio station.
  • If you have a Facebook page, web page or twitter account – share this mesaage and as your friends to take action.

If you have…
…received an Incentive Funding Grant
…participated at the Agricultural Education Elite Conference
…received a reduced rate E-Z Record Book Subscription
…enrolled in the Beginning Agricultural Teachers Course
…enrolled in the Experienced Agricultural Teachers Course
…participated in Professional Development activities
…used the BSAA, PSAA, or new Biotechnology Curriculum
…received New Agricultural Education Program Start-up Materials
…received a Program Improvement Grant
…received an Agricultural Education Planning Grants
…benefitted from the PAS/Collegiate FFA/IAVAT Student Branch Dues package
…Received a GAST Grant
…used www.agriculturaleducation.org as a resource
…read an Agricultural Education List serve message
…then this is your fight! There is no time to sit on the sidelines and watch what happens. You have to ask yourself, “If not me, then who? If not now, then when?
