So what the heck is Ning?

A couple of days ago we covered what opportunities Twitter hold for young farmers, but what we discovered was even more of a mystery to Ag’s Promise attendees is the social community site Ning.

What the heck is Ning?

According to the company’s creators, Ning is the social platform for the world’s interests and passions online. Millions of people every day are coming together across Ning to explore and express their interests, discover new passions, and meet new people around shared pursuits.

In other words, Ning allows people or groups to create their own custom social networks.  Most of these networks revolve around a specific niche or interest.  Ning looks like a combination of a Facebook page, forum, and blog.  While Facebook pages & Twitter allow people to connect, Ning offers a deeper, more customized way to approach online communities and conversations.

So why is NYFEA on Ning?

NYFEA saw Ning as an opportunity to connect young farmers on a new level.  We hope young farmers will become active participants on the discussion boards as they network, share stories and experiences, get advice from others, and uncover the issues that will affect the next generation of agricultural leaders.  You can also add pictures, videos, blog posts, your location on a member map, events, and status updates through our Ning community.  If we all actively work together, the Agriculture’s Promise Ning site could become a growing resource made for farmers with updates by farmers.

How to join:

  1. Visit http://agriculturespromise.ning.com & look for the “Sign Up” link in the top right corner.
  2. Ning will ask for your email, password, and birth date.
  3. Ning will then ask you to create your profile with your name & location.
  4. You will be taken back to the Agriculture’s Promise Ning home page.  The bright blue box at the top of the screen and the “Welcome” box to the left under Members give you suggestions as what to do next.  You can customize your page, join a discussion, add your photo, update your profile, or post to your blog.

If you have any problems joining or navigating the Ning site, you can leave a comment here or in the “Troubleshooting” discussion on Ning.

Hope you’ll join the Agriculture’s Promise mission!
